Whether it’s climbing the stairs of a skyscraper, or aiming to achieve any other lofty personal or professional goal, to reach the top takes desire, determination and fortitude. At the 2015 YMCA Stair Climb for Los Angeles, the goal was two parts: 1) Raise donations to ensure local families in need have access to all that the YMCA in Los Angeles has to offer, and 2) Give participants an opportunity to challenge themselves and climb all 1,664 stairs to the top of the US Bank Tower in Downtown Los Angeles. Once again this year, Herbalife was the Official Nutrition Sponsor of the event, which is in its 22nd year.

“We are honored to partner with the YMCA of Downtown Los Angeles and to once again be the Official Nutrition Sponsor of this year’s YMCA Stair Climb,” said Herbalife Senior Vice President of Worldwide Finance and Strategy Frank Lamberti, who is also a Ketchum-Downtown YMCA board member. “Sponsoring this year’s stair climb supports our vision to change people’s lives through living a healthy, active lifestyle.”
Thousands of people climbed the US Bank Tower – the tallest building west of the Mississippi – and many were Herbalife employees who accepted the challenge. “At 59 years old, I knew this climb would be one of the biggest challenges of my life,” says Herbalife Import Customs and Compliance Analyst Belz Velasco, who completed the climb. “But the challenge was worth it and the feeling when you reach the top is priceless. I hope that I’m an inspiration for others to do it in the future.”
Throughout the day of the event, participants got to enjoy a lively block party, which included an Herbalife tent serving a range of nutrition product samples. Climbers who made it to the top of the tower were rewarded with well-earned refreshments and dramatic views of the city below. “To view the city from so high up and see how far I had climbed really put the magnitude of the challenge into perspective for me,” said Herbalife Digital Asset Archivist Mark Holmes. “But helping to raise money for a great cause like the YMCA in Los Angeles was really the icing on the cake.”
The work Herbalife is doing with the YMCA in Los Angeles is part of a broader sponsorship program aimed at promoting good nutrition as part of a healthy, active life. The sponsorship is a part of the Herbalife commitment to playing an active role in the Los Angeles community. The Stuart Ketchum Downtown YMCA is one of the 26 branches of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (LA Y), a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening communities by supporting youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Serving Los Angeles since 1882, the LA Y offers unique programs and services that provide more than a quarter million families each year with the tools and encouragement to learn, grow and thrive.
Herbalife is proud of all of the YMCA Stair Climb for Los Angeles participants for their support of a very worthwhile cause and determination to take on the challenge. Perhaps Belz Velasco’s favorite motto says it best: “Success often comes to those who dare and act, but seldom goes to those who are timid and afraid of consequences.”
