To get a better idea of Ronaldo’s commitment to Herbalife, just ask Independent Herbalife Members Michael Beckett and Martin Hughes of Melbourne, Australia. They received a welcomed guest when Ronaldo attended their Nutrition Club, Shape Up Melbourne.
In town for the International Champions Cup tour, Ronaldo’s team became aware of their Club. Beckett and Hughes received a call. “Martin and I are about to leave for the day. So we hung around,” said Beckett. “The next thing you know, Cristiano walked through the door and my jaw dropped. The person who brought him in asked, ‘Do you know who this is?’ I said, ‘Yes, he’s hanging up on my wall,’ as I pointed to his poster.”
So what was the most famous Herbalife-sponsored athlete really like? “For being the No. 1 footballer in the world, he’s really down to earth,” said Hughes. “He was a casual chap just sitting down and talking with us about the products.” Once the shock of the moment passed, Michael and Martin did what they do every day in their Nutrition Club: helping guests. Specifically, they talked to Ronaldo about product usage, what time of day to take them and how to take them. “When you’re here with us, we treat you like everyone else,” said Hughes.
Beckett said their Nutrition Club is inviting and full of good energy. “It’s about learning who the guest is and connecting. We were listening to Cristiano and asked him how we could best serve his needs.” The pair said Ronaldo spent more than 30 minutes at the Club and, in addition to discussing nutrition and Herbalife® products, they talked about soccer. “He signed our poster and took a photo with us,” said Beckett. “He wasn’t in a hurry.” Meeting people face to face is one of the reasons the Nutrition Club model is so appealing to Beckett. “The Nutrition Club brings you closer to people.”
The visit from Ronaldo generated positive buzz. As far as Hughes is concerned, the opportunity to have such a high-profile guest happened simply because “the stars aligned.”
Beckett, a 23-year banking and finance professional, discovered Herbalife in 2011 after receiving a flyer for a Weight Loss Challenge. Hughes, after becoming an Herbalife customer in 2012, retired from a career in corporate project management to pursue the Herbalife business opportunity.*
