Shao was always fascinated by science as a kid, and after learning the value of hard work in his family’s business, his interest in science led him to pursue a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry at Tufts University. The advancement of scientific research became his passion, and two esteemed mentors reinforced his commitment to scientific integrity.
He brings that same level of commitment to Herbalife and enjoys mentoring newer members of his team as they support the development of products around the world and answer questions local regulators may have about the safety and benefit of Herbalife ingredients. “We are beholden to science,” Shao says.
According to Shao, early evaluation of ingredients in the ideation stage of product development is critical to providing consumers with great products. So his department works closely with other Herbalife regional teams and supports them with scientific substantiation, innovation, academic outreach and product research.
As Herbalife continues to develop new products and improve existing ones, he looks forward to helping optimize ingredient specifications and building an infrastructure to support the company’s scientific process globally. “It’s a unique opportunity to be part of a nutrition company so committed to its scientific infrastructure,” he says. “I couldn’t work for a company that didn’t share my commitment to scientific integrity.”
